It may taste like the sweet, sweet opposite of what you’d normally think of as acidic, but soda is a major acid offender. The citric acid in soda wears away at tooth enamel, promoting cavities and tooth decay. Then, after you swallow, it causes your body to produce acid. Too much acid production over time may increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, kidney stones and bone loss. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, alcohol, fried food and white bread are also acid-producers. Most vegetables and fruits are alkaline—including citrus, even though it’s acidic going in.
