Moderate levels of narcissism can give you the self-confidence and extroversion to rise to a leadership position, according to a study published in the journal Personnel Psychology. But being more narcissistic doesn’t make you a better leader—it works against you. As one of the authors of the study says, people who achieve “a nice balance between having sufficient levels of self-confidence, but do not manifest the negative, antisocial aspects of narcissism that involve putting others down to feel good about themselves” are the most effective.
