Cut Sodium to De-Puff Your Peepers

Puffy marshmallows and pillows are one thing—but puffy eyes? No thank you. If the bags under your eyes are as big as a Birkin, it may be time to cut some excess salt from your diet. Just like a bloated belly, your under-eye area can swell when you consume too much sodium as a result of water being pulled from your cells into the surrounding tissue. Not a good look. For starters, try to limit the “pass the salt” requests next time you’re mid-meal, and also steer clear of processed foods that are packed to the brim with sodium. It’s also a good idea to add more potassium to your diet, since the mineral blunts the effects of salt by pushing excess sodium out of the body. Most of us only get about 50 percent of the recommended daily dose of potassium, in fact, so chances are you could use it! A few studies have linked potassium supplements to irregular heart beats though, so aim for 4.7 grams a day via foods like sweet potatoes, avocados and bananas. Hey, you never did see a monkey with puffy eyes, right?
