Researchers arrived at this depressing stat by comparing activity levels and cardiorespiratory fitness of over 2,000 study participants. Six hours of sitting per day had the same impact on fitness levels as one hour of exercise—but in the opposite direction. This increases the risk of cardiovascular problems. The good news, if you have to spend a lot of your time sitting for work, or in the car, is that any movement is good movement. Standing, stretching, pacing or even fidgeting counts!
