Your Consciences Makes You Feel Fat

In a series of studies, researchers instructed people to recall a time they did something unethical, like lying or stealing. Later they were asked whether the felt like they weighed more, less, or the same as usual. Under the burden of guilty memories, people estimated they were heavier than normal—when, of course, their physical weight hadn’t changed at all. And you thought “weighed down by guilt” was just a metaphor.
