Our society has made huge strides in gender equality over the years—no question—but there’s still more to go. Women still earn about 11 percent less than men with equivalent education and experience, and certain studies suggest male-female behavioral differences might be the reason. In one study, researchers told participants that they would earn anywhere between $3 and $10 to play Boggle, and ultimately paid everyone $3 at the end. Amazingly, eight times more men than women reacted by demanding more money when they heard the news. Other studies support this too, showing that four times as many men as women ask for more money during job offers. The lesson? It never hurts to ask. Men and women alike, speak up for yourselves.
