Beauty Etiquette: How to Tip at the Salon

Salon experts explain the right way to tip a job well done.

You just got a fabulous new cut — and it wasn’t inexpensive. You want your hairdresser to be amply compensated for those genius skills she has with the scissors. But when you’re at the cash register, you freeze: What am I supposed to tip? 10% 20% 15% I don’t want to under-tip … but I am not made of money, either!

Don’t worry, most people are unsure of the correct protocol when it comes to tipping. So YouBeauty spoke with salon experts Edward Tricomi, Joanna Vargas, Jin Soon and Hibba Kapil about the right procedure when it comes to acknowledging a job well done. Whether you’re getting nail, hair, spa or waxing services, we got you covered on all the right beauty etiquette!

If the owner of the salon is the person cutting/coloring hair, would she get tipped the same or at all? I have heard people say that the owner should not receive a tip.
