When you take a normal step, your weight lands, first, on your heel, then shifts to the long bones of your foot (the metatarsals), and finally ends with your toes. In this process, your foot pronates, or rolls from the outer metatarsal bones to the inward ones, distributing weight evenly. Some people have the tendency to overpronate, meaning they pronate their foot too far inward, putting too much weight on the big toe, while others underpronate, putting too much weight on the outer metatarsals.
