4 Tricks to Take Makeup From Day to Night

Sometimes after-work plans (hello, happy hour!) are the perfect medicine to get you through a long week. But it can be a little tricky to make sure you're office-appropriate and also primped and ready for your night out later. After all, everyone in the office is going to be a little confused if you walk in at 9 a.m. with a full-on smokey eye and shimmery lids. Luckily, with the right products and a few quick tricks, you can make this transition effortlessly at the end of the day. Whether you’re going from the office to an after-hours party or trying to transition from a day trip to a date night, we're here to help you change up your look from work to play with just a few extra swipes of shadow and liner.

Work the creases
A neutral daytime lid can be “dressed up” in a matter of seconds with a deeper shade of shadow and a good blending brush. Work the color into the outer corners of the eye and sweep it into the creases of the eyes for a sultry effect. Just be sure to blend the color well to avoid any telltale lines.

Try: Christopher Drummond Beauty Pressed Eyeshadow in Aphrodite, $21Dr. Hauschka Eyeshadow Solo in Smoky Gray, $20, or Rouge Bunny Rouge Eclipse Eagle Long-Lasting Eye Shadow, $25

Define that lashline
Line your upper lid with a dramatic shade of liner. Short on time? Use a pencil to draw a thick line, then blend it out with your finger for a smoky look. If you want to line your bottom lashes as well, start at the outer corners and work your way in. Stop halfway for a more natural evening look—or line all the way to the inner corner for maxed-out nighttime drama.

Try: Rouge Bunny Rouge Raven Glaze Lacquer Eyeliner Raven Glaze, $28 or Dr. Hauschka Eyeliner in 02 Charcoal Gray, $18

Add an eye-catching pop
Go from daytime beauty to nighttime dazzler in seconds! Sweep some sheen along your brow bone, dab some sparkle on the inner corners of the eye or pat a pop of pearlescence on the ball of the lid—these tricks will add attention-worthy luminescence and dimension that are perfect for a night out.

Try: RMS Living Luminizer, $38 or Rouge Bunny Rouge Sleeping Under A Mandarin Tree Loose Glitter Pigment Fire Drops, $23

Amp up your lashes
You’ll be amazed what a few crimps of an eyelash curler and couple coats of volumizing mascara can do. If you wear mascara during the day, first soften it up by running your fingers under water and then gently massaging your lashes with your wet fingers. Then give your lashes a curl and swipe on some drama-inducing mascara. (The blacker the better!)

Try: Japonesque Pink Heated Mini Lash Curler, $16VMV Hypoallergenics Oh-La-Lash! Volumizing Mascara, $23 or d.j.v. beautenizer Volume Lash Black, $22
