Rice, rice water, and rice flour have been ingredients in some of the most best skincare brands around the world. The luxury brand Tatcha explains on their site how Japanese geisha would use leftover water from washing rice in their baths. The brand now use rice bran in everything from serums to cleansing oils.

Different parts of the rice plant have proven to soothe, hydrate and exfoliate the face —and if you can’t afford the top shelf products, here’s how to get those benefits at home!

DIY Rice Beauty Recipes for the Face:

Rice Water Cleanser & Toner: Rinse 1 cup of rice, then place in a bowl and cover with water. After sitting for about 15 minutes, the good stuff seeps into the water. Pour out into a spritz bottle. (Also, you can then cook the rice and eat it afterwards!) You can use as a spot treatment, a toner and a straight up cleanser. It will last for five days in the fridge. Bonus: if you make your own masks at home, you can replace water with rice water, or simply add a tablespoon.

Rice Water Face Mask: Make your own tissue face mask! Take a paper napkin (or even a paper towel) and cut in an oval shape that will sit on your face. Cut out eye, nose and mouth holes (simply fold in order to cut). Fold up and then soak in the rice water you made. After a few minutes, lift the mask and gently squeeze out the excess fluid; simply apply to the face and lay down for 15 minutes. Scary-looking Instagrams encouraged!
