Makeup for Heart-Shaped Faces

Enhancing your face shape can take your makeup look from ho-hum to hello, gorgeous.

Voluptuous and sweet, the heart face shape starts broad at the forehead and cheeks, and sweeps down into a pointed chin.

And all of our beauty experts unanimously agree: A heart-shaped face provides the perfect background with which to highlight a pop of color on the lips.

“There’s nothing like a classic red lip on a heart-shaped face. Something about bringing out the Betty Boop in a gal always makes me smile,” says celebrity makeup artist Molly Stern. Opt for a blue-based red on fairer and medium-toned complexions, and look for a touch of coral in your red if your skin color is deeper. The key to pulling off any bright shade is to make sure the color reads vibrant against your complexion.

For the most modern rendition of a bold pout, start with a base of concealer blended with lip balm so that the shade you apply stays true to its hue.

Skip the lipliner (which can easily veer into dated “Melrose Place” territory), and instead apply color with a lip brush, taking special care to first sketch a crisp line on the outer edges of lips before filling in with color.

Alternatively, you can play with a pink-red shade, which lends itself to either a full-on or sheer rendition. “Just imagine a child wandering in a field of berries, and their heart-shaped faces have strawberry stains on their precious lips. The look is sweet and irresistible!” says New York makeup artist Nicole Bryl. Try a shimmery lip gloss for a flirtatious look that takes only seconds to swipe on, or a creamier liquid lipstick for a more grown-up and polished finish.

Lashes:
Defined lashes not only complement a bold lip, but can make for a coquettish wide-eyed look, particularly if you have wispy bangs that further emphasize your eyes, says makeup artist and hairstylist Eva Scrivo, author of “Eva Scrivo On Beauty.”

For maximum flutter, you’ll want to run a spoolie brush (the ones that look like long mascara brushes) through lashes between coats of lengthening mascara. You can then go back and touch a volumizing formula to the outer corner of lashes for extra oomph.

Cheeks:
The apples of your cheeks are another spotlight of the heart-shaped face, so placing a pink cream blush right in this spot will instantly revive the complexion and give you a healthy glow, says celebrity makeup artist and YouBeauty Makeup Advisor, Fiona Stiles.
