For a girl on the go, dry shampoo can be the ultimate time-saver. A quick spritz at the root and your hair doesn’t only look oil-free, it’s more voluminous and often looks better than “just washed” hair. But, anything in excess can have less-than-desirable consequences, and hair dressers and trichologists have been warning us about the overuse of dry shampoo for years.

According to DailyMail, a high dependence on dry shampoo can lead to scalp conditions such as flakey scalps, sores and even bald patches. That’s right, bald patches.

“It [dry shampoo] contains an oil-absorbing substance to soak up the grease, but if it’s used constantly it’s going to dry out the hair and the scalp and make it flaky. If it’s left on the hair too long it can also clog up the pores, leading to spots and sore patches,” says celebrity hairstylist Lee Stafford.

One woman from Wiltshire, England, Kerry Kilmistir, claims that this horrific outcome is exactly what happened to her. “After a few weeks, though, I noticed my scalp was getting itchy and sore. I started getting bad dandruff, and then I developed little sore patches on my head, which would catch on my hairbrush and bleed.” Once Kerry stopped using her dry shampoo, the sores healed up.

Thankfully, dry shampoos have changed drastically since the sixties and seventies when they were super chalky. They’re now less harsh and double as a volumizing styling product. Nonetheless, it still deposits an oil-absorbing ingredient that can severely dry out the scalp if used too frequently. So, it’s better to use the product in moderation rather than as an everyday staple.

As a dry shampoo addict myself, I’ll definitely continue using this hair savior, however, it’s good to think twice about using it too often. Maybe a good scalp scrub is best to ward off any build up that might cause sores and bald spots!
