Invest in Your Relationships

Wintertime is the best season for reflecting on the important people in your life—and whom you might want to cut ties with.

I always say: each day is a new day and a new beginning to start over. This is quite true with relationships, too. When someone always makes you laugh and feel happy, but you don't see him or her enough, maybe it is time to invest. I’m almost certain that your friend will like it even if you call him or her out of the blue!

I think this is the time to think about who you are, what you want, and who you want to be around. Who do you want to spend the holidays with? All that matters in life is Love with a capital "L." Have you heard the saying: "If you love something, set it free. If it does not return, it was never meant to be." I believe that. But also if you don't invest in people at all, there won't be much you will get in return.

COLUMN: Why is it so hard to appreciate your partner?

Become the person you would want to have as a friend yourself. If you want love from your family, the best chance to get it is to give love yourself. Many times this will bring you love and respect as well.

And, if not? Well, that brings me back to what I said before: If you feel you are not appreciated enough by certain people, go hang out with people who do love you. And there is always someone who loves you—starting with yourself. While this time of the year can be dark and gloomy, it is also the time of intense feelings, love and appreciation. I hope you are lucky enough to be in a good place, and that you are spending these days with true loves.

Love,

Lonneke
