This weekend, Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson reminded us that even the threat of suspension from his show isn’t enough to keep his ultra-conservative views to himself.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robertson received the “Andrew Breitbart Defender of the First Amendment Award” at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, February 27. During his acceptance speech, he took the opportunity to let everyone know how he feels about the rate of STDs in our country.

“There is a penalty to be paid from what the beatniks, and it morphed into the hippies — you say, what do you call the 110 million with the sexually transmitted illness?” Robertson continued. “It is the revenge of the hippies! Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll have come back to haunt us in a bad way.”

He then offers sage advice for how to stay STD-free: Marry someone who is disease-free and only ever have sex with them.

While we’re all for promoting fidelity over here, stigmatizing STDs as a beatnik hippy problem that makes you unfit for marriage doesn’t help educate anyone on what actually can cause them and how to be safe. Nor does it help anyone who has one feel like they can be honest about it without being completely judged. We’ll stick to getting tested regularly and having safe sex, like our gynos (healthcare professionals who are educated specifically about this stuff) recommend.
