Update, 5/18/15 at 8:15 AM:

After an interview with Variety, Cate Blanchett allegedly implied she has had romantic relationships with women in the past. However, the 45-year-old actress is now claiming that her words are being taken out of context, People magazine reports.

In an interview with reporters at a Cannes International Film Festival press conference, Blanchett said, “From memory, the conversation ran: ‘Have you had relationships with women?’ And I said: ‘Yes, many times. Do you mean have I had sexual relationships with women? Then the answer is no.’ But that obviously didn’t make it.”

Sexual orientation has been quite the hot topic in Hollywood lately. With Bruce Jenner coming out as transgender and Miley Cyrus claiming she’s not “entirely straight,” it should come as no surprise that yet another celebrity has come forward about her own sexuality.

This time, it’s Cate Blanchett who’s admitting to have had lesbian relationships in the past. This admission was prompted by an interview by Variety to speak about whether her role in the upcoming movie Carol was her first time playing a lesbian. Much to everyone’s surprise, Cate responded with, “On film — or in real life?” To which the interviewer immediately pressed for more details, but all Cate admitted to was having had relationships with women in the past “many times.”

Blanchett, who’s been married to playwright Andrew Upton for 18 years (they have four kids!), seems to relate to her character in her upcoming movie more than we all would have thought. Like Carol, Blanchett likes to disregard labels when it comes to sexual orientation. “I never thought about it,” she explains, “I don’t think Carol thought about it,” NY Mag reports.

In the movie, Carol never explicitly “comes out” and  “her sexuality isn’t politicized,” Blanchett explains. “I think there are a lot of people that exist like that who don’t feel the need to shout things from the rafters.”

Maybe Cate was inspired to admit her own sexuality after connecting so deeply to the character in her film. Or maybe she was simply joking in her interview with Variety. Either way, it’s just another open-minded celebrity showing support for those who may not always get the support they need. So, good for you Cate!
