Hyperpigmentation is really tough to get rid of. The most effective way (but expensive) is to have a laser treatment at the dermatologist or plastic surgeon's office. The most inexpensive way to get rid of sunspots is to pick a topical product that has proven ingredients to fade spots. Anything with niacinamide (B3) is a good choice. Olay's brightening line called Definity contains that ingredient, as do the brands NIA 24 and DDF. It takes several MONTHS for these products to make a difference, so don't give up, but be realistic about what a skincare product can do for you. If your spots are really, really dark, they won't get rid of them completely, but perhaps fade them a bit. But the single most important thing for sunspots is to wear sunscreen EVERY SINGLE DAY RAIN OR SHINE. If it's really sunny, wear a hat, too. Avoid direct sunlight whenever possible. Even a small amount of UV exposure can undo all of your fading efforts.

You could look into getting a chemical peel or microdermabrasion. I have some discoloration from acne and go to American Laser Skincare where they sell these things in packages for like a grand and under. They also give out great deals. The consultation is free too. So it doesn't hurt to go and get an opinion! It's been a miracle for me. :)

Also, if the hyperpigmentation appears in patches, rather than spots, it could be a condition called melasma. Melasma is caused by hormones - birth control pills, pregnancy and sometimes just normal fluctuations can cause it. To really control melasma you have to practice sun avoidance as much as possible, and wear zinc oxide sunblock EVERY TIME you step outside. Also wear a hat. The second UV light hits melasma it triggers it to come back.

that pigmentation it main cause if u expose to sun too much w/ out protection... or using facial cleanser which trigor... if you using toner... try to put in spoon then light up w/ flame (using lighter) if the color of flame blue its mean harsh chemical..much better if were gonna use water base.. toner/facial wash... a facial wash w/ active vitaminsC that helps to fight pigmentation ...,and early signs of wrinkle and dark spot...,and i know which company have that kind product,,, . u can't buy to watson or drug store..if you want to know massage me...have a nice day!

I have been dealing with Melasma for over ten years and it can be very demanding. I always wear sunscreen and a wide-brim hat because, as Courtney said, it only takes a second of UV light exposure and the dark spots are back. I would give almost anything to be able to allow the sunlight to warm my face again.

my melasma was terrible last summer. my job requires me to be at the pool almost every day during the summer (i know how awful, lol) i wore tons of sunscreen hats the whole nine yards. ppl were constantly asking what was wrong with my face. i didnt even have to be in the sun, just getting hot made it bad. i finally decided to stop my birth control. it has got better, i just hope its better becore this summer. i'm trying loreal's youth code to fade the faint reminders. my heart goes out to all the women who have the same problem.

As I have to keep my face covered from the sun due to melasma, it tends to be much whiter than the rest of my body. Would applying a sunless tanning lotion to my face worsen the dark spots?
