Probably just based on the heat your phone generates from being in use. I would definitley suggest using headphones of some sort with your phone, especially if you will be having conversations that are 15+ minutes.

Noticed it happens with my iPhone too, so I also use headphones for longer work calls.
The heat is from the battery... my phone gets especially hot if I use it while its plugged in and charging.
