Good question! Haircut pricing can range anywhere from $25 to $300, depending on where you live. In bigger cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, $85 to $150 is the standard. Elsewhere, $45 to $75 is normal. Different hair stylists within a salon may fetch different prices. Call the salon and ask them the price per hairstylist. You can request an appointment with the lowest priced hairstylist, knowing that you can expect a quality cut because they have been vetted by the salon in order to work there.
The amount you should spend on your cut also depends on the intricacy of your cut and the texture of your hair. If you have straight or wavy hair and prefer a simple cut with blunt ends, then a chain salon or lower priced salon can do this just fine. If you have curly hair or layers, or are looking to make a big change (going from long to short, etc), then I would splurge for a salon that gets great reviews in your area. Check a review site like Yelp.com for customer reviews on salons near you. Allure.com also has reviews of salons in major cities, here: http://www.allure.com/salon-spa-reviews.
If you find yourself paying for a pricier cut, ask your hairstylist to give you a hairstyle that lasts longer or requires less maintenance, and they'll be happy to oblige!
Hope this helps!
