Hey Everyone!! I just found this site and love it!!! Anyway, every month when I get my period the first day is when I have horrible cramps. I know that people say Midol is great but I've tried taking those and bc they have caffeine in them, it makes me shaky and I could feel my heart racing. I hate those feeling, I guess Im sensitive to caffeine. I've heard that taking a certain type of aspirin is more effective but I forgot which one it was. I usually take whatever I have in my house ( Advil or whatever). Does anyone know which over the counter pain killers are the best for cramps? Thanks, I appreciate the help :)) Kelly

I'm not big on over the counter medicine. But A lot of different pains can soothed with different types of teas. A good one I found is cinnamon tea. I don't have the recipe for it right off hand but i'm pretty sure you can google it. Also grapefruit seed extract can really help the cramps you can but it in tea and such. I hope you find something that can help you!!:) I know how it is!

I had horribly painful cramps for years (am now in menopause) and the only thing that worked for me was Ibuprofen...800 milligrams every 6 hours as prescribed by my dr. I also used the Thermacare pads...you can attach them to your panties so they lay against your abdomen....they heat up within @ 1/2 hour and help to relieve the cramping. I also used pads vs. tampons the first few days...for some reason it seemed to lessen the severity of the cramps. You may also want to have your dr. check you for uterine fibroids or endometriosis as both can cause severe cramping. In my case there was no physical cause...it was just the way I am (or was!) but you may want to get checked out just to be sure. Good luck!

I have had cramps throughout the years bad enough to make me faint from the pain. You asked about OTC remedies, but, in my experience, nothing works as well as remedies that require a doctor's prescription. Heat can help, so I would second the use of heat pads. The NSAIDs of aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium are usually found to be more effective than acetaminophen. However, if your finances allow, a visit to a gynecologist for birth control pills (what finally helped me) may be worth it. Or, if you are in a state that has legalized medical marijuana (such as California), and your employment situation will allow for it, I know several women who have found that to be the most effective remedy of all.

I have the same problem as you. My first day is absolutely horrible. I have tried Midol, Pamprin, and Ibuprofen. The only one that works for me is Ibuprofen. After an hour of taking two pills, the pain has decreased significantly. By the second hour, I feel no pain. Hope this helps!

Dandelion Root Tea. Trust me, I take that when I start my period,so as to prevent the cramps, and it works better than a charm. But if I don't drink it before , and have the cramps , I drink it - and it alleviates them preeetty quickly. But.. be sure to drink water along side it.. it can also be used as a diuretic ( depending upon how strong it is). Hope this helps!
