I used to suffer from migraines. I talked to my doctor about it and she suggested having my hormone levels checked. Then she prescribed the Nuva-ring (contraceptive) which slowly releases estrogen and progesteron into the body to balance my hormone levels. I used for about a month and have been migraine free ever since. Oh! I tried Imitrex (the shot) it was just a flash of intense burning that distracted me from thinking of the pain migraines cause, but once that wears off, the migraine pain returns.

My biggest advice is to see a neurologist who has a certified specialty in migraine treatment. Here is a list of neurologists across the USA who do: http://www.headache-adviser.com/support-files/headache-docs-2010.pdf I see Dr. Brian Grosberg at Montefiore Headache Center in NY, one of the best treatment facilities. A general doctor or neurologist is not going to have the experience to be able to truly help you. For years, I suffered from 10-15 migraines a month. I now get about four, which are controlled have minimal impact on my day. My treatment has been a combination of daily preventative medication, vitamin supplements, avoiding food and lifestyle triggers, eating a non-inflammatory diet, daily exercise, stretching and meditation.
