Varicose veins are different from the more common problem of spider veins. Spider veins are cosmetic issues, but true varicose veins are large veins of the legs and thighs that protrude. And yes, not only can they be painful, but they can lead to wounds called venous stasis ulcers. The most qualified doctors that treat varicose veins are called vascular surgeons. These guys (and gals) understand that mechanics of not only the cosmetically bothersome veins of the legs, but also of the deeper veins. Often treatment requires more than just the treatment of the cosmetic issues. Vascular surgeons use traditional methods like surgically removing ("stripping") those veins, or they might use the newer technologies like lasers or electric current to destroy them.
Of course, wouldn't it be nice to simply prevent the development of varicose veins? They are more likely to occur if you stand for long periods of time or if you become pregnant. Ask you doctor for prescription strength compression stockings and wear them as much as possible. Your legs will feel better after a long day and you will be doing everything possible to avoid developing those unattractive veins.
