New studies show that regular diet soda consumption and artificial sweeteners in general are linked with weight GAIN! In a recent study that took place over 10 years, diet soda drinkers had a 70 percent greater increase in waist circumference than those who shunned diet drinks. Those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist circumference increases that were 500 percent greater. Does this news make you want to stop drinking diet soda? Discuss!!!

IT is not really about the weight gain. The chemicals IN the diet sodas are the problem. Phosphoric acid robs the body of calcium and potassium. Splenda is made from sugar by adding a CHLORINE molecule to it! REALLY!? Ick! Weight gain is the last thing on my mind when it comes to diet drinks!

First it was the problem with caffeine in the soda and the different artificial sweetners. From there it went to phosphoric acid and the problems with that. Moderation is the key. I have cut down a lot in the last year or two. I drink water mostly. Soda, for the most part, I have on the weekend.

This is one of the stupidest things I have heard!  People are going to eat what they want, whether it makes you fat or not. If they add tax to it, people will just steal it. You will never "price it out of reach".  I thought this was America, and we should have freedom to eat what we want!

I have tried to decrease my diet coke consumption for a couple of reasons.  First I typically associate it with something sugary (peanut M&M's) or something salty (nuts, chips etc.).   I don't normally drink it with an apple.  Also I do find it makes me have more carb cravings.  Finally it isn't good for me.

This is correlational research only. It is a misuse of statistics to imply causation based on it. It is quite possible that people with weight problems drink more diet soda than thinner people because they are trying to lose wieght. In otherwords, it is a mistake to assume that diet soda causes weight gain instead of the opposite, that being fat motivates people to drink diet soda.

^ perfect response, haven't we all seen obese individuals order a burger and fries along with a diet coke? I'm not necessarily advocating diet soda, but I would like to see some research that suggests that diet beverages are directly linked to weight gain, rather than comparisons between diet soda and non-diet soda drinkers without specifying the groups making up each category. The majority of diet soda drinkers could be misguided overweight individuals who think it may help them lose weight, without identifying other issues within their diet (i.e. the accompanying burger and fries)

maybe it is the fact that the people who drink diet sodas are already overweight.... and so over those 10 years not only were they drinking diet sodas, they were eating more because they are overweight and just continue to eat more...... i dunno. i do agree that diet drinks are just cans of chemicals & not good for us.... i only drink 2-3 per week so maybe i'm good................................

I was a huge coke drinker(non diet) after giving birth to my daughter ( I gained 75lbs) I couldn't lose that last 40 lbs. one day I was out of my coke and my bff had her case of diet Pepsi in her car and gave me a few to tide me over till I made it to store. I switched over to diet Pepsi & in 6 weeks with no other dietary change at all and no change in my continued daily walk- I lost the 40 lbs in just 6 weeks! From just switching from regular coke to diet Pepsi! And 4 1/2 yrs later still at 123 lbs ! So clearly it's probably the eating habits that have affected those in study.

None of them are good for you..  Just drink water and get used to it. You can add a little Crystal Light flavors if you like, anything with artificial sweetners is not good for you.

Diet pop is like a treat for me in the sense that I HATE the Chemicals but oddly enough I love the taste, so every 3 months or so I will have one. I don't think that is too bad

The bit about phosphoric acid is specious, since it's in ALL cola drinks, always has been.  And yes, phosphoric acid DOES make you lose calcium.  On the other hand, the chocolate in chocolate milk chelates calcium (ties it up so that your body can't absorb it).  If you're worried about building bone mass before menopause, stay away from colas and chocolate consumed at the same time as a calcium source.  Chocolate milk is NOT a calcium source for children.  It's sugar water to drink.
