I tried electrolysis and it was both painful and effective to a certain degree. It did help decrease a goodly amount of hair on my chin, but it also left pitted holes that are as big or bigger then open pores. For the amount of pain and time it took I would not do it again, even if paid to do so.
Stick with laser hair removal. After the electrolysis I went to a dermatologist and had a session of laser hair removal done. It was not as painful as the electrolysis was and it was so much faster! I was in and out in 30 mins for my entire chin, cheeks and sideburns. (I pretty much had a lady beard. ugh). My skin looked red and angry for a few hours, but the next day it looked like I had the youthful, clear skin of my teens back. Gone were the brown spots from tweezing hairs on my face and my skin actually looked better for having the process done. It lasted approximately 3 months for me before I started seeing baby hairs growing back, but even those were finer and sparser in appearance then before.
I wish I had had the money to have gone for all the sessions as recommended. It's 4 years later and the hair is back, not as much as it once was, but it still is uncomfortable in public, even after shaving. I paid about $400 for the entire beard area. I am on the east coast though and prices are horrendous here!
