I inherited a very hairy body for a woman. I got curious about laser hair removal, but my mom said electrolysis is the only way to permanently remove hair. Is this true? Has anyone had laser hair removal? How large of an area on your body can be done? What was the price range you paid? What is it like?

I tried electrolysis and it was both painful and effective to a certain degree. It did help decrease a goodly amount of hair on my chin, but it also left pitted holes that are as big or bigger then open pores. For the amount of pain and time it took I would not do it again, even if paid to do so. Stick with laser hair removal. After the electrolysis I went to a dermatologist and had a session of laser hair removal done. It was not as painful as the electrolysis was and it was so much faster! I was in and out in 30 mins for my entire chin, cheeks and sideburns. (I pretty much had a lady beard. ugh). My skin looked red and angry for a few hours, but the next day it looked like I had the youthful, clear skin of my teens back. Gone were the brown spots from tweezing hairs on my face and my skin actually looked better for having the process done. It lasted approximately 3 months for me before I started seeing baby hairs growing back, but even those were finer and sparser in appearance then before. I wish I had had the money to have gone for all the sessions as recommended. It's 4 years later and the hair is back, not as much as it once was, but it still is uncomfortable in public, even after shaving. I paid about $400 for the entire beard area. I am on the east coast though and prices are horrendous here!

I have had laser hair removal. It's effective - two half legs were about $80 for one session (depends on what city you are in , I think). You will have to go multiple times, something like five or six weeks apart. There are often promotions so I would recommend waiting for those. And it hurts, but the degree depends on what area you're doing. It also goes away shortly after the treatment...or with an advil. They will do a test area on your first visit, so you can decide then if it's too painful for you. It's permanent too...but some hair can come back due to hormonal changes (e.g. pregnancy). You can do as small or large an area as you wish. I don't know how any of this compares to electrolysis. It was a fairly fast procedure, they run a wand up and down the area. I'm very glad I got it done.
