Hi Kayla101, I was also embarrassed to tell my mom about my period, so I completely understand your situation. Mine came in the summer when I was on swim team, I just took a deep breath and told her. She was very understanding and shared her story with me. (It happens to all of us, so your mom should understand that we all go though this.) Some of our editors are going to share their stories with you below, so you'll have a few ideas to help you feel the most comfortable about telling your mom. Anne

When I got close to puberty, my mom talked about my period all the time. She used to send me to summer camp with a suitcase full of pads in case I got my period while I was away (of course, I was totally mortified). Even though she was open about it, I never wanted to bring it up and I always tried to end the conversation. When I did get my period, I was in 7th grade and it was right in the middle of the school play (horrible timing). I was totally embarrassed and had no idea how to tell her, so after the play, I just called her into my room and showed her my underwear. It may not have been the most graceful way to tell her, but it got the job done and my mom was really supportive. However you choose to tell her, she's been through it too and she'll support you.

Kayla, I also got my period at 12 and understand that it's awkward to share this with your mom. I told my mom by writing it down on a piece of paper and handing it to her. That may be a less embarrassing way to go if you don't feel comfortable telling her yourself. But please remember that there is nothing at all to be embarrassed about! Sure, it will be a bit awkward, but your mom will understand (she's been there, too). My mom was super excited when I told her and took me out to dinner to celebrate!

Hi! A good place to talk to your Mom could be in the car while she's driving you to or from school or wherever. That way, you don't have to look at her if you feel embarrassed. She's been there too, so you shouldn't feel awkward but I know how you feel.

Yeah i had my period in 5th grade!!!! nd it was aweful because i got it on Christmas, and my mom wasn't around, and my grandmother was freaking out... My mom had "the talk" with me when i was in 4th grade which was aweful! But it's good when "the talk" is done, because then you know things that you may not want to talk about others with, and you could ask your doctor about more detailed things if your mom talking to you about it is too uncomfortable.

when i was at home i went to the bathroom and then i saw red stuff on my underwear so then i went to my room and changed my underwear and told my mother to supply me with pads asap! so she went to the store and gave them to me it wasnt a big talk or nothing its was more like a okay she needs pads.. it was like whatever and dont be shy to tell your mom your on your period its nothing serious plus you will look back and think how dumb it was to be shy

I'm young too. I got my period at 10 and I was nervous at first and iI believe that most people are. I think you should just tell her and get right to the point. It's going to be embarassing and I went through it but it brought me and my mom closer together and now I can tell her anything. When acctually doing it just be calm and relaxed and just say something like, "Mom I started my period.", and ask for supplies if you need them. Good Luck!

Dont be scared just tell her, it is as easy has that. she isnt gonna make you feel bad about it because it is all natural. If you are thinking about a way to tell her just do it when you are both alone. Good luck xx

Hello there dont be scared, the best thing you should have done was to tell her right way, she wouldnt be mad trust me. You ahve two ways to tell her either you wait until its back and tell her then or when you are both alone. Just don't be scared she is you mom and she probably wants to help you. Good Luck xx

Hi Kayla101, I started my period at twelve and was really nervous to tell my parents. I tried to avoid the "TALK" and just said it strait forward Instead of keeping it to myself. You'll feel weird talking to your mom about it but will soon know it is all natural and perfectly fine to talk about anything with your parents.

Hey guys im 10 yrs. old im on my 2 period and its normal to think it is awkward to tell your mom but she will be happy about it don't worry you will have cramps, crave for chocolate or something like that so all you do is either tell her in a note or tell her in a text (if you have a phone) or tell your sis (if you have one) but male sure its a sis that has had there period or if you don't feel like you can tell her tell someone else that you trust like a family friend thats a girl and have them tell her for you that is what i did don't worry you will be fine

I am about to have my period. Just tell your mom and ask her to bring you to Target or Walmart to buy you some pads that you can bring to school so you do not have to rush around to find one. Bring an extra set of clothes and keep it in your locker at school just in case of any accidents and you can see blood in your pants. The ages that you can have your period is at 8-15. The normal is at age 12 and it is OK if you get yours a little late. Just be ready and when it finally happens tell your mom or dad right away.

Hey Kayla101, for my period you see I got mine when I was 10. I was pretty scared when I got it. I talked it through with my mom. I know how you feel. I don`t like talking things through with my parents either, but when you do, you will understand what you have to do. Your mom got her period maybe the same age as you were or maybe younger. Girls around you are going through the same exact thing. Periods are different for everybody.

I didnt have to have the talk you learn about puberty and periods in school and your mom has it as well so there are always pads in the bathroom. My mom kept stocked in pads and i used them when i needed them. im assuming she knew then when they were going faster but there was never a talk it wasnt ever a big deal. its something go threw it dont make you a woman or an adult it just means your reproductive system is come into play. I myself didnt start till i was almost out of high school but i just kept pads in my school bag for the just incase it starts ill be ready. this is something every woman goes threw and then later in life around 50-60 it stops. i hope this helps the young girls deal with it

I just got my period today so i know how you feel at first i was freaked out to tell my parents but then i rememberd its important to tell the parents because they tell you what will happen and the mom will tell you will get sore breast and little cramps on your lower belly and when you feel something warm or wet on you know where that means your period process is starting, but dont be scared when it happens because its normal for girls. Always tell your mom because shes your only best friend. Also never tell anyone or your friends and i mean EVERYONE because thats your personal private life but only tell your mom.

Yeah ... um. I've been on my period for about 2 or 3 years now ... and I'm 13 right now. Me and my mom aren't close, so I never really thought about telling her. I want to tell her today, she's downstairs watching tv ... and the rest of the family is out right now. I just don't want my relationship with my mom to 'get better' because I tell her this. I'm closer to my dad, and my mom's ... not very smart. I dont want anything to change. I told one of my friends about this before school ended ... and my friend just got a little mad at me and told me "There's nothing to be embarrassed about and blah blah blah." I know it happens to every girl, it's not supposed to be that embarrassing. It will get very awkward though. It's not that I'm embarrassed, its not because it's going to be awkward ... it's because my mom's just been very worried every since she found out I ... self harmed .. from the school councilor. And now she cries at night ... and I don't even feel bad for her. :/ There's something wrong with me. Anyways ... getting off topic.. I'm going to either try right now, or just awkwardly not do it at all ... wish me luck 😊 and I hope you have already told your mom .. it's been 2 years for you. If you can't/haven't like me you can write it on a piece of paper. P.S. Don't ask how I survived without tampons or pads 😂

Don't ever be afraid to tell your mom that you got your period! It's nothing to be ashamed of. I got mine when I was 11. I was with my dad in a camp far away from my house, we were with my aunt and uncle, and it was kind of scary because I had to tell my aunt. When I went into the bathroom I didn't know what it was. So I went out and sat by my aunt on the couch and whispered in her ear "I think I got my period" she made a big scene, but I'm glad I told her. Later I had to call my mom and tell her about it over the phone, she told me that it was completely normal to get it at my age. It's nothing to dread over, now I'm 14 and when I get my period I just yell, "MOMMM I GOT MY PERIOD AGAIN!!" 😂. Like I said don't worry about it, your mom would never ever make fun of you for getting it. We've all been there

I'm 13 and I got my first "." 2 days ago when my friend was sleeping over at my house and I didn't know how to tell her or my mom. So I told my friend first. I told her to come to the bathroom because I had to tell her something. I said "I got it" And she knew what I was talking about. Last year she got her first "." At my house so I wasn't really scared to tell her. But I don't know how to tell my mom. I want to tell her today but I don't know how to say it and I don't want to hear the talk I already heard that in 5th grade. I'm in 8th grade now. Every time I tell my mom ANYTHING she posts it on Facebook calls every single family member and tells them. She bought pads about 3 months ago and I've been sneaking them without her noticing. Please help me tell my mom😭

I got mine about a month ago, and we were on a trip to something my brother was doing. I found out in the bathroom of a chick-fil-a xD Anyway, I put toilet paper 'down there' and sat in the car, planning to tell my mom when we were alone or something, because my 3 brothers were sitting in the car with us. So, we had to go Walmart to get some sunscreen for my oldest brother, and when I got out of the car, my mom was right beside the car door, so I turned and whispered in her ear, "I got my period..." And she was like "Okay." Like she didn't even make a big deal about it. We were in the store the other day, and my mom was getting tampons, and she said, "When do you think you wanna start using tampons?" And it was totally normal for her even though it was embarrassing for me. So, to answer the question, and the reply above mine, just tell her. She's been through it too, and for the reply above mine, just tell her you know about "it", (The thing you get the talk for, thats what I did and I never got the talk. She just asked me if I had any questions about it) and that you had your period 2 days ago, and get a really serious face, and tell her not to tell ANYBODY. Good luck! :D

I was the same way! I was really nervous, too. I don't really know why.. Because she's my mom and she's been through the same thing. But I was still nervous. We were growing to walmart to get shampoo and I thought that would be the perfect timing to tell her. This is how I told my mom: "Hey mom, I sorta need some more "products" before school starts." We got some and I didn't really get the talk in the car because I had already had it before. And my brother was in the car so I knew she wouldn't bring it up. Lol! That easy! I hoped this helped!

Ok so if this isn't right I'm sorry. So I am also 12. I haven't had the talk with my mom yet because I haven't started. So when the time does come just ask your mom to go on a ride or into your room and... well what I would do is just blurt it out and obsess over what you said later. If you're not comfortable with your mom you can go to the nurse at the school. Or you could talk to your doctor at your physical. I hope this helped. Bye.

I am 11/years old and just got mine today. I sucked up the confidence after reading some of these inspirational articles and while my mom was giving me things to wrap up my bff's Christmas gift up I said "mommy, I have been wanting to tell you this all day. I started my period.she dropped the wrapping paper and shouted," you became a woman today!!" And svd hugged me and was like do you have pads?" I said no. She said, "you can use some of your sisters". We didn't have much of a talk but we got through and I went to my room and wrapped up the gift. Thank God it wasn't that bad like some people say and she was pretty understanding. She must've sensed that I was being quiet and she didn't say anything else. Thanks😊

I`m sorry. But that cracked me up. Chill. Just get them in a good mood. And sit down. And talk to them.
