Hi Kayla101, I was also embarrassed to tell my mom about my period, so I completely understand your situation. Mine came in the summer when I was on swim team, I just took a deep breath and told her. She was very understanding and shared her story with me. (It happens to all of us, so your mom should understand that we all go though this.) Some of our editors are going to share their stories with you below, so you'll have a few ideas to help you feel the most comfortable about telling your mom. Anne

When I got close to puberty, my mom talked about my period all the time. She used to send me to summer camp with a suitcase full of pads in case I got my period while I was away (of course, I was totally mortified). Even though she was open about it, I never wanted to bring it up and I always tried to end the conversation. When I did get my period, I was in 7th grade and it was right in the middle of the school play (horrible timing). I was totally embarrassed and had no idea how to tell her, so after the play, I just called her into my room and showed her my underwear. It may not have been the most graceful way to tell her, but it got the job done and my mom was really supportive. However you choose to tell her, she's been through it too and she'll support you.

Kayla, I also got my period at 12 and understand that it's awkward to share this with your mom. I told my mom by writing it down on a piece of paper and handing it to her. That may be a less embarrassing way to go if you don't feel comfortable telling her yourself. But please remember that there is nothing at all to be embarrassed about! Sure, it will be a bit awkward, but your mom will understand (she's been there, too). My mom was super excited when I told her and took me out to dinner to celebrate!

Hi! A good place to talk to your Mom could be in the car while she's driving you to or from school or wherever. That way, you don't have to look at her if you feel embarrassed. She's been there too, so you shouldn't feel awkward but I know how you feel.

Yeah i had my period in 5th grade!!!! nd it was aweful because i got it on Christmas, and my mom wasn't around, and my grandmother was freaking out... My mom had "the talk" with me when i was in 4th grade which was aweful! But it's good when "the talk" is done, because then you know things that you may not want to talk about others with, and you could ask your doctor about more detailed things if your mom talking to you about it is too uncomfortable.

when i was at home i went to the bathroom and then i saw red stuff on my underwear so then i went to my room and changed my underwear and told my mother to supply me with pads asap! so she went to the store and gave them to me it wasnt a big talk or nothing its was more like a okay she needs pads.. it was like whatever and dont be shy to tell your mom your on your period its nothing serious plus you will look back and think how dumb it was to be shy

I'm young too. I got my period at 10 and I was nervous at first and iI believe that most people are. I think you should just tell her and get right to the point. It's going to be embarassing and I went through it but it brought me and my mom closer together and now I can tell her anything. When acctually doing it just be calm and relaxed and just say something like, "Mom I started my period.", and ask for supplies if you need them. Good Luck!

I think that you should tell her cuz that way they will start to treat you more like an adult and not like a baby that wat happened to me
