Life can get stressful. Whether it’s work, a relationship, friends, or family, there’s almost always something that’s going on to stress you out. Even if you do yoga every day, drink CBD lattes, and meditate- life can still get stressful. Stress can cause headaches, fatigue, and irritability. And if it’s not handled right, the stress will go nowhere. You can try working out to relieve stress, deep breathing, or spending time with loved ones.

But sometimes, the only thing you need in a time of stress is a good massage. It might not cure all your problems, but stress can cause muscle tension that a massage would certainly alleviate. The right massage is relaxing for both your mind and body and can feel like a breath of fresh air when everything else in your life seems to go south.

Massages are one of those things I always told myself I would start to get more regularly once my life got to a pretty steady phase of stressfulness. I was told by friends and family that regular massages would help my stress and that I should give it a try. I usually shrugged them off, thinking to myself that a massage isn’t going to cure anything. But after a particularly stressful week, I decided to give one a try.

The Sound Therapy Massage Experience

I made my way down to Haven Spa at 250 Mercer St in New York City, hopeful that if anything, I would at least feel temporarily relaxed. And the massage I received took me by complete surprise.

I opted for the Harmony Massage, a new massage service offered by Haven Spa. It’s described as the epitome of relaxation, consisting of sound therapy, Ayurvedic massage, and aromatherapy. I’ve always been a fan of essential oils and aromatherapy, so it sounded tempting. The massage uses tuning forks to restore the body’s electromagnetic field. Tuning forks provide sound therapy that can help to induce relaxation.

The sound waves restore balance in the body, by your keeping muscles, nervous system, and organs in perfect harmony. The goal of the massage is to help you reach a point of utter relaxation, using the sound and aromas to ease with emotional pain and restore that sense of balance.

Being someone who is generally very emotional and pretty much always stressed, reaching a point of utter relaxation seemed far out of the question. I was still tempted to try it, however, for the tuning forks and aromatherapy seemed intriguing. Haven Spa is beautifully designed, and everyone who works there is calm and friendly. The spa is clean and calming, and I felt a sense of relaxation the minute I walked in.

The Harmony Massage is 80 minutes long, which I thought was perfect. The masseuse was very friendly and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. She explained the process beforehand, so I knew what to expect. If you’ve never been touched with tuning forks- you’re missing out. I never thought I’d say that, but the massage in combination with aromatherapy and sound therapy was more relaxing than I could’ve imagined. I found myself drifting off into a state of peace and relaxation, my mind wandering off to happy memories, far, far away from the stresses that usually flood my mind.

Would I go again?

When the massage finished, I felt calm and relaxed. I was gifted two essential oils- one for grounding, to use when you feel stressed, and one for lifting, to use when you’re feeling down. The oils are perfect for keeping in my bag and serve as a reminder to use when I feel stressed or anxious.

Overall, the Harmony Massage at Haven Spa changed my perception of massages. I used to think they were a waste of time and something I would never spend money on. Now, I’m going to make it a point to get a massage whenever I’m feeling extra stressed. It’s unbelievable how much a massage can help both your mind and body. If you’re looking to feel zen when life gets hectic, try out the Harmony Massage at Haven Spa. Your chakras will thank you.
