How do you know when it’s time to get rid of or replace certain things in your life? Most things don’t come with an expiration date like food.

For the most part, we usually don’t get rid of something until it’s completely torn apart. But, from pillows to bras, there are a lot of things in your home that have likely overstayed their welcome. Here’s a guide on when to replace common items in your home…

Mattress. If the mattress on your bed is nearly a decade old, that’s too long. Mattresses should be replaced every 7 years.

Bed Pillows. Pillows are like mattresses and can collect dust mites. To eliminate that problem, replace your mattress every 2 years.

Towels. Towels should be replaced every 2 to 3 years.

Running Shoes. Toss those puppies in for a new pair every 6 to 12 months.

Bras. For the best support, you should replace your bra every 8 months.

Toothbrushes. While there are some people who replace their toothbrush once a week, you don’t need to go that extreme. You can actually replace your tooth brush every 3 to 6 months.

Bike Helmet. Bike helmets should be replaced every 3 to 5 years. If you’ve been in an accident, replace it immediately.

Smoke Detectors. It’s safe to replace smoke detectors every 10 years, however if there’s no sound when you perform the test it’s time to replace.

Refrigerator. It’s time to replace your refrigerator if there is excessive condensation.
