The news that Scott Disick checked into rehab may not surprise even occasional viewers of “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” where Disick’s partying ways are a constant source of tension with his longtime girlfriend, Kourtney Kardashian.

But what about the news that he checked into a “shamanic healing center”?

The father of three checked into Rythmia Life Advancement Center in Costa Rica on Monday, TMZ reported. But it’s not just any rehab. On its web site, Rythmia calls itself a shamanic healing center with “fireside ceremonies” which use the Iboga root. Iboga is a plant with a psychedelic effect and has been used as a treatment for addiction, in particular opiates such as heroin. As VICE magazine explains in a piece about Iboga:

“Some claim it’s something of a miracle cure for opiate addiction with minimal withdrawal symptoms. The theory goes that after a long, heavy trip on Ibogaine you no longer want heroin or other drugs quite so badly.”

Taking Iboga, which the center sources from the African country of Gabon, is meant to be a “physical cleanse” and a “spiritual experience” that seeks to heal trauma, Rythmia’s web site states.

Gossips at The New York Daily News suggest something else is afoot: $$$$$. They claim Disick is being paid “mid-six figures” to go the rehab as a publicity stunt. Indeed, there are photos of Disick arriving in Costa Rica on paparazzi photo web sites and reportedly, Rythmia released a press release about Disick’s check-in (not typical protocol for a health facility). Hey, what’s the point of struggling with addiction if you can’t make a buck off it, right?

Nevertheless, Disick issued a statement on Monday night: “I realize my issues are bigger than me and I’m ready to truly remedy this struggle I continue to battle.”
