Chances are you’ve had some kind of foot pain in the past. Certain structural attributes can make you more susceptible to different types of discomfort.

For a high arch and relatively rigid feet, opt for shoes with a high throat, lots of toe space, and shock-absorbing insoles—which compensate for your feet’s lack of natural flexibility. Very flexible feet, on the other hand, are great at absorbing shocks, but not as supportive, so get orthotics right away! Very flat feet can’t support weight for very long, so try substituting swimming or biking for running, and get some thick, cushiony insoles.
