Anne Hathaway gave hope to The Princess Diaries movie fans young and old—and you know who you are—when she confirmed that talks for a third installment are in the works during an interview on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. There’s been little word on the project during the past year, so the audience greeted the update with excitement. “That is so cute,” said Hathaway to the audience’s reaction. The Princess Diaries 3 would pick up the story of the unlikely teenage princess from San Francisco.

The Oscar winner made her feature film debut starring in the first 2001 movie as Mia Thermopolis. The awkward teen learns there’s a small European country called Genovia and she’s in line to inherit the throne from her late father. Julie Andrews portrayed grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi and Chris Pine was introduced as Mia’s love interest Nicholas Devereaux in the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. There are reports that both Andrews and Pine are considering returning to their roles.

“There is a script for the third movie. There is a script,” Hathaway told the Andy Cohen crowd. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”

“It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it,” said the 36-year-old mother of one. “It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

The production would go on without the legendary director of the first two movies, Garry Marshall, who sadly passed away in 2016. He had said that year that he and Hathaway were talking about another installment.

The author of The Princess Diaries books, Meg Cabot, confirmed in July 2017 that interest in the franchise continued as “kind of a tribute” to Marshall. Andrews the same year told BuzzFeed she and Hathaway were willing.  “I think we might do it in honor of him,” Andrews said. “Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to.”

And that’s where things stood when Hathaway updated the status of The Princess Diaries 3.

There’s been no word on the chances of another version of the modern-day fairy tale coming to life. Cabot told BuzzFeed she was really hoping to see the young adult novel as a Broadway musical. “… obviously, somebody has to write the music and lyrics, and I’m not gonna do that because that’s not where my talents lie,” Cabot said. “So I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that some day we’re gonna get one of those. That would be so fun.”

In the meantime while we await the return to Genova, Hathaway fans can see Hathaway starring with Matthew McConaughey in the neo-noir thriller “Serenity.” Andrews most recently delighted with a surprise cameo in “Aquaman” giving voice to a mythical sea monster.
