If you haven’t already heard the news: Kanye West is running for president.

Or, is he?

This isn’t the first time the music icon has thrown around the idea of him as president of the Untied States. But can a Kanye presidency realistically happen? It’s not as easy as it sounds.

Kanye announced he was running for president with a tweet that said: “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION“.

But, that’s all we’ve really heard for now, and I’m not quite sure if the whole thing is just one big joke or if he’s actually being serious. However, we do know that his wife, Kim Kardashian, and billionaire Elon Musk are by his side.

But the reality of Kanye West running for president isn’t so easy. First and foremost, there’s only four months left until the election, meaning he’d have to move things extremely quickly. He missed the deadline to file as an independent candidate in many states and the remaining states have deadlines coming up very soon. And getting on the ballots as an independent candidate is difficult in itself. He would need thousands of signatures across the states before registration closes, just to get his name actually on the ballot. Which is only the first step in the longterm process of running for president.

And the motive behind Kanye west “running for president” is definitely not clear. His political affiliations are uncertain. He advocated for Trump many times in the past, going so far as to sport a “Make American Great Again” hat in support. However, Kanye also joined in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and recent protests, which contradicts many of Trump’s beliefs.

So, is Kanye West running for president as a way to hurt Biden? Or is it a way to hurt Trump? Or, is it one big (and frankly, not funny) joke that he’s made up. For the sake of our already unstable political climate, I hope it’s the latter. The last thing we need right now is another candidate thrown into the mix to confuse people. But even if Kanye is serious, it seems like he’s jumped on it a bit too late for a presidency nomination to happen.

Better luck next time, Kanye.
