The start of the new year means the start of many resolutions. I love the beginning of the year because it’s an excellent opportunity to set the year out on the right foot. Start that book you’ve been meaning to, travel to that place you’ve been dreaming of, go to the gym more often. The new year means new opportunities. And with new years resolutions often comes new ways to prioritize your self-care.

In 2020, we’re putting ourselves first! And often, that comes with taking charge of your self-care, whether that’s reading a book or taking extra time with your skincare. So if one of our new years’ resolutions is prioritizing your self-care, here are a few ways you can go about it:

Wake up early
If you’re not an early riser, waking up early can be tough. But that is precisely why I challenge you this new year to wake up and start your day early. It’s incredible how much you can accomplish in a day when you just set your alarm a few hours earlier. Waking up early gives you extra time to get stuff done, and without all the commotion that comes throughout the day.

Say no
You should never, ever feel bad about saying no to something you don’t want to do. Even if you feel like you have to go to an event, but you really don’t want to, don’t force yourself to go! Saying no to some things in life is an essential step in prioritizing your self-care and putting yourself first.

Sleep more
We are leaving sleepless nights and tiring days in 2019! This year, we are getting plenty of sleep. Getting the right amount of sleep is crucial for your mental, physical, and emotional health. Often times, the reason behind a bad day is simply just not getting enough sleep. And getting to bed early means you can wake up early and have a productive day.

Start reading
Even if you’re not a fan of reading, make it a point to read a little bit more than you usually do throughout this year. Find a book that interests you and read a few pages every day. You can learn so much from reading about yourself and the world around you.

Eat healthily
Eating healthy is a typical new year’s resolution, but it’s a good one. Fueling your body with nutritious foods will lead you to a better body and mind. And although it’s important to treat yourself, it’s also essential to nourish your body with healthy food that is going to make you feel good.

Move your body
Moving your body and exercising is just as important as eating healthy. If working out isn’t your thing, you don’t have to force yourself to go to the gym- merely going on a walk or a run is a great start. There’s yoga, pilates, cycling, and a ton of other ways to move your body and get your blood flowing. Just find a way that works for you.

Try journaling
Sometimes the best way to release our stresses is with writing. One of my goals for the new year is to journal more, as writing things down can help you put things in a new perspective. You can journal about anything one your mind, from your future goals to your feelings about a person or a thing. Regardless of what you write, journaling is a great way to prioritize self-care.
