Although many perfumes contain potentially harmful chemicals, such as phthalates and parabens, that you may choose to steer clear of, many fragrance companies are stepping up to the plate by going beyond just organic and natural. Some use biodegradable ingredients, while others donate money to green charities or source aromatic extracts from women’s cooperatives. Check out these feel-good fragrances and find the ones that hit all the right notes for you.
Give your skin a dose of antioxidants and your nose a deliciously lush scent with Lavanila Laboratories The Healthy Fragrance (seen here in Vanilla Blackberry), $58. Free of alcohol, petrochemicals, phthalates and synthetic fillers, this formula touts a unique blend of essential oils and botanicals including blackberry, raspberry, Goji berry, Kakadu plum and Madagascar Vanilla.
For the 30th anniversary of their signature White Musk, The Body Shop White Musk Libertine Eau de Toilette, $24, is remixing a new blend to incorporate their Community Fair Trade organic alcohol made from organic sugar cane straight from Equador.
Made of 100 percent recyclable glass and packaged in certified forest paper, both of which are made at wind-powered facilities, Pure DKNY A Drop of Verbena, $65, has verbena basil (a lemon-like aroma) sourced from Africa as well as a hint of synthetic musk.
Laced with safflower and jojoba oil along with vitamin E, Demeter Fragrance Library Roll On Perfume Oils, $10, are 97 percent natural and alcohol-free. And with 250 different scents to choose from, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find an aroma that truly appeals to you.
Tahitian vanilla, honey-jasmine, tea and fruit notes make up Pacifica Spray Perfume in Island Vanilla, $22. The natural grain alcohol and essential and natural oil concoction is also free of phthalates, parabens, synthetic dyes and mineral oils. Plus, the fragrance is vegan, as well as cruelty- and gluten-free.
100 percent natural, Verte by Sarah Horowitz Parfums, $95, is a grassy fig scent that has top notes of yuzu (an Asian sour citrus fruit), green mandarin orange and spearmint followed by neroli (oil distilled from the flower of the bitter orange tree), sandalwood and Madagascar vanilla nectar.
Every D.S. & Durga perfume or cologne, $58, are made by hand. Each ‘olfactory tonic’ is made by blending oils, resins and plant extracts—and only natural ingredients wherever possible—then given a unique when-it’s-made code.
Wake up your senses with citrus-based Organic Glam Orange Blossom, $220, which has Brazilian tangerine, green mandarin, sweet orange and Moroccan neroli. Plus, there are no artificial fragrances, colors or phthalates and no animal ingredients.
With only biodegradable ingredients (meaning, they won’t bio accumulate in the water supply), C2C LIV GRN Eau de Parfum spray (in Cherry Wood, Earth and Natural scents and also a natural oil roll-on), $60, lets you spray away with a ‘green’ conscious. Infusion Organique Eau de Parfum in Buddha Fig, $35, has certified organic fig extract, rose-geranium essence, organic lemongrass oil and essences of wood and amber. The scent is also paraben-free and has a hybrid formula of organic and safe synthetics.
Non-toxic and phthalate-free, Agape & Zoe Naturals Eau de Parfum Roller Balls are available in a slew of scents including Repose (lavender and vanilla), Green (cucumber, mint and Manadrin orange) and Sugared Crush (cotton candy, bubble gum and vanilla), $10-$15.
Arquiste Parfumeur fragrances are made up of mix of natural oils and extracts along with safe synthetics and come in six unisex scents inspired by historical people and places, such as Fleur de Louis (a woody floral with orange blossom and white cedarwood inspired by Louis XIV), $165-$175.
Inspired by the scent of a Mediterranean garden after a rainfall—a mix of bergamot zest, galsamic cypress, jasmine and white musk—Thymes Bergamot Vert Cologne, $32, doesn’t contain any parabens, mineral oil or animal-derived ingredients.
Although it looks like an eye shadow quad, the new Melange Solid Perfume Blending Palette in Vanilla (also in Amber, Floral, Citrus, Green and Fruit) $28, contains four travel-friendly hand-poured beeswax and jojoba oil-based solid perfumes.
The ylang ylang from Comoros Islands and Benzoin from Laos in Tocca Graciella Eau de Parfum (inspired by the screen siren Gracy Kelly), $68, were sourced from sustainable resource programs.
Housed in jam-like glass jars to help preserve the fragrance naturally, Parfums Honore Des Pres Paris Eau de Toilette 100% Natural Origin (in NU Green, Sexy Angelic, Honores Trip and Chaman’s Party), $84, are free of any petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes, animal-derived ingredients or anything that would irritate skin.
You don’t have to sacrifice lasting scent for purity with Lavinila Laboratories Forever Fragrance Oil (which comes in Vanilla Coconut, Pure Vanilla or Vanilla Grapefruit), $26, since each roll-on contains a hydrating sweet almond oil base that stays on skin for up to eight hours.
A non-toxic formula that contains a mix of synthetic and natural ingredients such as bergamot and petigrain (a steam distillation from oranges), make up Malin+Goetz Petitgrain Tonic Eau de Toilette (also in Synthesized Geranium Leaf, Lotus Root, and Musk, plus Rum and Lime Tonic), $48.
