Skincare is like a series of constant trial and error. You find something you like, and after a few months of using it, you decide it isn’t for you. Or you’re just tempted by the constant releases of new and exciting skincare products. A jade roller? Might as well try that. Mini skincare fridge? Sounds unnecessary, get me one ASAP! If you’re anything like me, you probably have a whole cabinet in your bathroom devoted to skincare products you never really use, or use once in a while, whenever you remember.

One of the hardest parts of skincare is knowing when to do what step and how often to do it. Some people tell you to exfoliate every single day, while others say it should be once a week at most. Some people claim serums are a holy grail, while others prefer to skip it altogether. And some days, we go all out with our skincare routine, complete with a face mask, jade roller, and all. And other days, we can barely bring ourselves to wash our faces. Bottom line, we all do different things when it comes to skincare. But if you’re struggling to find a routine that works for you, here’s a guide on when to do your skincare routine steps.

Daily Skin Care Tasks

One thing you should do daily is washing your face. You should never skip out on washing your face! The other products you should use daily are serums, sunscreens, moisturizers, and eye creams. You don’t have to do all of these, but if you choose to do so, these are the ones you should do every day. Put on sunscreen in the morning on top of your moisturizer. Apply serum at night, and an eye cream either in the morning or night- whichever works best for you.

Weekly Skin Care Tasks

One thing we should do weekly is exfoliating. It’s imperative to exfoliate because you want to clean your skin of dead skin cells, which will help to prevent acne. Other things you should do weekly, and not every day are face masks. Although face masks can provide amazing results, they should not be applied daily. You can alternate between using a few different types, but never more than 1-2 times a week as you don’t want to irritate your skin.

Monthly Skin Care Tasks

Lastly, the things we should do monthly are procedures like facials, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, and peels. An esthetician typically does these things and requires you either go to a spa or a dermatologist. These products can help with acne, fine lines, scarring, wrinkles, and collagen reproduction. They can be expensive and can be a lot for your skin to handle, so they should only be done once a month.

It’s important to use skin care products and follow a skincare routine that works for you- but this is just a guide! You want to make sure you don’t put too much on your skin, as too many products can dry out your pores and cause acne. Follow a routine that works for you and your schedule and keep your skin healthy and mind happy!
