Last night at the Emmys, Connie Britton’s red carpet style was the talk of the town. A nominee for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role on Nashville, Britton paired a gold embellished blue-green velvet gown by Naeem Khan with polished yet understated makeup and glamorously tousled waves. And it’s the hair that truly carried it all. Celebrity hairstylist Creighton Bowman created the style, which he says was inspired by an Old Hollywood screen siren. “We went with a very editorial Veronica Lake look—we wanted the Hollywood waves, but with a little disheveled elegance,” he explains. Why does it work so beautifully for the 46-year-old star? The deep side part paired with textured waves complements Britton’s square jawline—her most prominent feature. In fact, our Haircuts By Face Shape guide reveals that the most flattering length for a square profile flows down towards the base of the neck (or even longer) to enhance the strong outline of the jaw with the power of length.Using Leonor Greyl products, a botanical French line popular among starlets, Bowman first washed Britton’s hair with Shampooing Reviviscence and skipped out on conditioner to help her fine hair hold style all night long. After towel-drying her locks, Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice was applied from root to tip to help create volume, and hair blown out with a paddle brush for lift at the crown. To position the side sweep that stayed in place, Bowman used Gel a l’Hibiscus just along the front hairline for hold. The waves were then created with a half-inch curling iron, and then set into pin curls to cool to guarantee the best hold for the night. Finally, Bowman combed a deep side part and brushed out the curls with the large paddle brush. Parts of the crown were backcombed with a wide-toothed comb “to give it the disheveled elegance we were going for,” says Bowman. Spray Structure Naturelle was misted all over to keep everything in place, through the air kisses and awards drama to follow.MORE: What’s Up With These Famous Dudes’ Hair?
