Update: Buzzfeed reports that Bruce Jenner will sit down with Diane Sawyer for an interview with ABC News to come out as transgender and discuss his transition. The interview will be timed with the announcement of an E! docuseries that has followed the extended Kardashian-Jenner family throughout the transitional process, as TMZ previously reported.
Representatives from ABC News and the Kardashians/Jenners have not commented on the planned interview, and there is no confirmed airdate as of yet. The UK’s Daily Mail has spoken to Esther Jenner, Bruce’s mother, who stated, “I just learned about [his transition.] I have never been more proud of Bruce for who he is, himself as a father, as an Olympian, a wonderful public speaker. He instills enthusiasm in people. He’s gifted.”
Original Post: After months of speculation, an unnamed source has confirmed to People that Bruce Jenner is in fact transitioning from male to female. The source “close to the family” told People, “Bruce is transitioning to a woman. He is finally happy and his family is accepting of what he’s doing. He’s in such a great space. That’s why it’s the perfect time to do something like this.”
When asked for comment about her stepfather on “Entertainment Tonight,” Kim Kardashian said, “I think everyone goes through things in life, and I think that story and what Bruce is going through, I think he’ll share whenever the time is right.”
As Kat Callahan wrote at Jezebel, “It’s really quite appalling to have [transitioning] framed as some horrible secret to be revealed, as if transition was an indiscretion, a bad habit, or a destructive decision. That’s not what transitioning is; transitioning is about healthy decision-making.”
TMZ reports that Jenner has signed on for a new E! docuseries that will discuss the procedures, goals, and psychological implications of the transition. The series is allegedly set to premiere in May or June; let’s let Jenner himself speak if he chooses at some point before then.
