Brides with broad shoulders and slim waists, hips and legs—think Catherine Zeta-Jones’ fabulous frame—are classic inverted triangle shapes. The key to looking your best on your big day? Choose gowns that help balance out your body frame.

Your silhouette style: Show off your trim waist with an A-line or ball gown silhouette, suggests Cecilia Flores-Barrón, co-owner of Warren Barrón in Dallas. “Fuller skirts balance the shoulders, creating a symmetrical silhouette and focusing on accentuated the waistline,” she says.

Avoid saying yes to dresses that can make you look top heavy, such as a mermaid, sheath or drop waist silhouette.

QUIZ: What’s Your Body Shape?

The best bodice: “Sweetheart necklines create an illusion of the shoulders being more narrow,” says Flores-Barrón. “Avoid tip of shoulder, cap sleeves and full sleeves, which will only accentuate your broad shoulders.”

The right embellishments: To ensure that you don’t draw attention away from features you’d like to play up, such as your slim waist, Flores-Barrón recommends keeping embellishments to a minimum, especially around the neckline.

The most flattering fabrics: Steer clear of dresses made from slinky fabrics, which will cling to the body, and instead opt for full skirts made of silk satin organza, tulle or lace.
