Bleeding after sex has happened to most people. It might not have been from your first time having sex, but at some point in your life, you’ve probably bled after having sex.

If you find yourself bleeding after sex, don’t freak out. There’s a lot of reasons why it could be happening, and most of them are not cause for concern. If you find yourself in this situation, this is why you could be bleeding:

7You had more intense sex than normal

A common reason for bleeding after sex is simply that the sex was more rough than normal, leading to a cut on the wall of your vagina.

6Your IUD got messed with

It’s possible that the string of your IUD can irritate your cervix while having sex, which would lead to bleeding.

5Your period

Either you are about to get your period, just got it, or it just ended- regardless, having sex around/on your period can definitely trigger bleeding.

4You might have a vaginal infection

This is definitely more serious, but yeast infections and bacterial infections can cause inflammation in your cervix, which would lead to bleeding. If this is the case, try to not have sex until your infection is fully gone.

3Your birth control

Bleeding after sex can also be a side effect of birth control. It takes a few months for your body to fully adjust to birth control, so spotting after intercourse is common.

2Your vagina was too dry

If this is the case, you might need to use lube next time you have sex. The friction from sex can tear your vagina tissue if there is not enough moisture, which would lead to bleeding.

1You have an STI

Sexually transmitted infections could also lead to bleeding after sex, which is often a side effect. If this is the case, it’s important to head to a doctor ASAP.
