The original “American Idol” Kelly Clarkson, with her seven studio albums, marriage, and eight-month-old daughter River Rose, has come a long way since her debut on the reality show in 2002. But Clarkson isn’t just attuned to her own success; she’s also passionate about LGBT rights. We can’t help but get behind this adorable declaration: Clarkson says it wouldn’t matter to her if baby girl River Rose is a lesbian.

When PrideSource (via E! Online) asked Clarkson how her and her husband Brandon Blackstock would handle it if River was a lesbian, Clarkson didn’t bat an eyelash. She says, “Oh, I don’t care. I mean, here’s what I hope for her: I just hope she finds love. It took me a while, man. And there was a lot of heartache throughout those years. You know, as long as she’s happy, I don’t care either way, and neither does my husband. And we have two other kids as well, and we don’t care either way for all of them.”

She says she’d be just as cool if River came out of the closet, and it’s hard not to believer her. Clarkson tells PrideSource, “I’d be like, “Awesome! When do we meet him or her?” Honestly, it’s so funny, it doesn’t even register in my world as different. I don’t know why. But yeah, it doesn’t. I’m glad it doesn’t!”

Sure, this line of questioning could have been a little bit of juicy gossip-mongering if Clarkson wasn’t so open-minded. But PrideSource was the right publication for the job and lesbians not-so-coincidentally do make up a part of Clarkson’s fanbase. Her lesbian fans are nicknamed “Kezbos” and support her every move. Even the video for her “Heartbeat Song” features gay and lesbian couples. Clarkson says her career isn’t why she supports LGBT rights: “I think it’s silly that we’re still talking about gay rights. I just live in this world where people are accepted, so it’s very hard for me to even realize that that still exists.” That’s a statement we (and maybe River one day) can get behind.
