A new study tested our partners’ reaction to a flirty Facebook message, and the results may surprise you. Men were more jealous when emoticons – specifically winky ones – were included in the message to their significant other. Women, on the other hand, were more jealous when their was no emoticon included. Women in general reported higher “Facebook jealousy”. Researchers think the gender difference accounts for the varying reactions. Women react more strongly to signs of emotional infidelity, while men respond more strongly to signs of sexual infidelity. Men tend to use winky faces as flirting (duh!) and women pick up on that, so men are worried that their S.O. is unfaithful. Women, meanwhile, are worried that their man is being emotionally unfaithful. What’s the one thing we can learn from this? Keep your (typing) hands to yourself.
