The middle layer of the skin, the dermis, is elastic in nature so that it can easily stretch and then bounce back to its normal condition. However, overstretching the skin (through weight gain or pregnancy) can push the dermis beyond its limits, causing it to tear.  These tears create scar-like lines or stretch marks that may gradually fade with time.  Watch this video for more insight into how stretch marks form.
