Making it in the modeling industry is difficult, and you can see exactly how challenging it can be in just a short episode of America’s Next Top Model.

If you’re serious about wanting to model, then here are eight things you need to know before giving it a go.

It Isnt Always Glamorous

One of the main things that can make modeling appealing is the A-list supermodels with lavish lifestyles that we often see in magazines and the news. What we don’t see, though, is the hard work and commitment it took them to get to where they are today. Modeling can be hugely competitive and is a career that requires you to start at the bottom and work your way up, which isn’t necessarily as fun as you might imagine.

You Might Not Earn That Much

Despite what you may think, models don’t get paid that well. Although $200 per day might sound a lot, these bookings aren’t regular, meaning they can often average out at around minimum wage. What you earn depends on how successful you are, so pay can balloon depending on this.

It Can Impact Your Self Esteem

Having a job that relies mainly on your appearance can sometimes be damaging. You’re always judged on your looks. You’re also compared to others based on this, which can harm your self-esteem if you’re not thick-skinned or prepared for it.

You Dont Have Regular Working Hours

Shoots can run at ridiculous times as early as 3 am, and you’ll often find they can run over until late at night too. Expect to work long days and unsociable hours.

Prepare to Ache!

Bending your body and holding yourself in awkward positions all day long for the camera can not only be tiring, but it can also leave you aching like mad afterward! Try to soak in a hot bath at the end of a shoot and get a good night’s sleep.

Your Health is Sometimes at Risk

Although you might like the idea of being dolled up regularly for photoshoots and fashion shows, your skin and health can sometimes suffer. Being caked in makeup and having your hair bleached or back-combed regularly can have long-term effects.

Hiring an Agency Doesnt Guarantee Success

A modeling agency is a great way to gain support in the industry and get some valuable jobs and connections, but it doesn’t guarantee you work. Many people can work with an agency but not gain the success they wish for. It depends on many other things.

People Will Always Have Opinions

Modeling isn’t for everyone, and sometimes people can struggle to understand why you’ve chosen this as your career. Whether it’s a partner that finds your long hours difficult or a family member that doesn’t approve of nudity, you can’t please everyone!
