Whether it’s sweating through our camis or freezing our behinds off, the change of seasons affects how we dress, eat, and even travel. It should also change how to we take care of our hair. How you care for your locks in summer should be different from how you care for your locks in winter. And that goes double if you live in a climate that experiences both of those seasons to their fullest.Davide Marinelli, an NYC based hairstylist/colorist who splits his time between working at Muze Salon in Manhattan, and styling for photo shoots, assisted us in creating the ultimate guide for hair care during each season. Here are his easy tips and tricks to keep your hair looking it’s best during winter, spring, summer and fall:

winter hair

Dry air and frigid temperatures are the worst. Besides drying out our skin, our hair takes a serious beating as well. So how do we preserve and protect our locks? Davide recommends shampooing less and doing a deep conditioning hair mask once a week. Also, showering with cooler water in the winter helps seal the cuticle, which prevents static. Another way to prevent those pesky flyaways? Sleep with a humidifier so the air in your room to keep moist air circulating. To repair and prevent additional damage to hair, try using a moisturizing mask such as Rita Hazan Weekly Remedy or Oribe Signature Moisture Mask once a week for added moisture.

Springtime feels like a breath of fresh air. So why not revive your hair to match the season of renewed life? Spring is a great time to let your hair be more natural, without styling. Use less hot tools and let your hair grow out for a fresh summer cut! It’s also a great time to indulge in some blowouts, the lack of humidity won’t make it frizz, and the air isn’t dry enough to create static. A win-win!

summer hair

We tend to forget how badly humidity, sea salt and powerful UV rays affect our tresses in the summer. It’s important to not use the same products in the winter that you use in the summer, since some products could be too heavy for the summer months.Beat the heat with anti-humidity sprays and dry shampoos like the Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray (to fight frizz), and the Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk (to absorb oil at the root).  Also, getting a clear glaze at your local salon can help seal the hair, aiding in blocking out the humidity. If you worship the sun, your hair — colored or not — can be damaged from the hot summer rays. Avoid heat styling since your hair is unfortunately already experiencing exposure to high temperatures. The more heat styling you do, and the longer you wait in between haircuts, can cause split ends to travel further up your hair. So try getting a trim every three to five weeks to prevent any long-term damage.Ultimately, the worst offense that the summer might place upon our heads is that colored hair/highlights really suffer under the sun. Start with a color enhancing shampoo and conditioner. Then, use a heat protector such as Tressemé Get Sleek Heat Protect Spray when blowdrying. If you have color treated hair, try a leave-in milk such as the Shu Uemura Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Thermo-Milk on towel dried hair for extra protection against color fading. Try to wait until you come back from your beach vacation to freshen up your color/highlights so they aren’t dulled or turn brassy under the constant exposure to sun.Pro Tip: When at the beach or pool, with wet your hair with water and a thermal protector such as Oribe Foundation Mist before entering the ocean/pool. This acts as a primer for your strands since dry hair is easily saturated by the salt or chlorine, which can lead to damage and split ends.

fall hair

Windy fall weather doesn’t just blow around those pretty red and yellow leaves every year, — our hair gets tossed around, too. Temperatures start cooling down and it’s essential to keep hair hydrated so it’s ready for the unavoidable winter cold.Davide recommends his clients to regularly do a scalp cleanse and exfoliation. People tend to solely focus on repairing their hair, forgetting that a healthy scalp is the base for healthy hair.Using a clarifying shampoo such as Clairol Hair Food Root Cleansing Shampoo is great for both men and women to use for a quick hair refresher. Many salons offer scalp treatments so make sure to ask your stylist if they offer one. However, make sure not to use a clarifying shampoo or scalp treatment after a fresh color since it’ll strip your strands of their new glossy color. For those extra windy fall days, spritz your styled hair with R+Co Outer Space Flexible Hairspray. It’ll give you enough hold to last all day, without the extra buildup.READ MORE: 8 Winter Skin Myths You Need to Stop Believing READ MORE: 4 Easy Ways to Winter-Proof Your NailsREAD MORE: Your Cold Weather Beauty Problems, Solved!
