Restorative Yoga for Beginners

What to expect: Gentle poses where the body is supported by blocks, bolsters and blankets to eliminate strain. Comfort allows students to hold each position longer to gain greater physical and mental rewards.

Who should try it: Pregnant women, older students, cancer patients.

The details: Researchers at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC observed 51 women with ovarian or breast cancer, who were actively undergoing treatment. Each participant in this pilot study took part in a 75-minute restorative yoga class, which combined postures, breathing and relaxation techniques, for 10 weeks. Subjects reported improvements in depression, mental health and fatigue, and more peace of mind.
