Hemorrhoids have three causes: sitting on the toilet for too long; straining during bowel movements; and chronic constipation. These three things put pressure on the veins of the anus, resulting in internal or external hemorrhoids. External hemorrhoids are the most painful, causing itching, bleeding and swelling.
