If you’ve ever had a UTI, you know how utterly painful it can be. Not only are you in complete pain, but you’re running to the bathroom every 5 seconds. UTIs are common, and thankfully, there are ways to treat them. Most people get an antibiotic, but it’s essential also to stay hydrated and avoid foods and drinks that can possibly irritate your bladder. But what about having sex?

Most people will tell you to avoid having sex if you have a UTI, but some people think differently. UTIs are started by the bacteria that is found in your bowels entering your urinary tract from your urethra. Having sex can cause bacteria to get pushed towards your urethra, which is why it’s so important to pee after sex.

Having sex can make you more susceptible to getting a UTI. So even if you’re already on an antibiotic and are treating your UTI, having sex isn’t going to make the situation any better. It’s possible to even get a second infection on top of a UTI if you have sex because the bacteria can enter the bladder more easily.

So if you do have sex while with a UTI, while you might be okay, you also might not be. It’s not going to kill you, but it probably won’t be all that enjoyable. Sex would probably be uncomfortable due to the UTI and penetration could make those symptoms that much worse if you get another infection. If you do decide to have sex while having a UTI, make sure to pee immediately after and stay hydrated. But a word of advice from us- avoid the bedroom if you have a UTI. You’ll be thankful in the long run.
