Sometimes, you just can’t beat those late night cravings. If you’re up late, had dinner a few hours ago, and hunger strikes- it’s hard to resist the temptation of a snack. Because when does an ice cream sundae sound better than at 1 o’clock in the morning?

You might try to get yourself to resist, but if the temptation is too strong, late night snacking is okay- if it’s done right! Instead of reaching for sweets and treats, go for a healthier option. It will still satisfy your craving without the guilt of eating something unhealthy late at night. Here are some of our suggestions for late night snacking:

Banana with peanut butter
If you’re more of a sweet tooth person and are craving some ice cream but don’t want to eat unhealthy, a banana with peanut butter will do the trick. It’s tasty and healthy, and some studies have shown that bananas help increase melatonin blood levels.

Tart cherries
Dried or fresh, cherries are an ideal late night snack. Not only do they taste delicious, but tart cherries supply melatonin which can help you sleep better. And they’re low in calories, making for the perfect bedtime treat.

Cheese and crackers
Everybody’s favorite snack, right? Cheese and crackers have both protein and carbs and cheese helps blood sugar levels. Make sure you watch your protein sizes, however, so you don’t overdo it on the cheese.

Cereal
A classic bedtime snack that can be healthy after all! Opt for a cereal that’s lower in sugar and higher in protein, so you’ll be kept full through the night and won’t feel the effect of a sugar high.

Pistachios
Pistachios are delicious and filling, and are full of protein, fiber, and healthy fats, making for the perfect late night snack. Nuts are easy to eat way over the serving size, so pour out the serving size in a bowl to limit your intake.

Bottom line- if you late night snack, you shouldn’t feel guilt for doing so! If hunger strikes, you should listen to it, otherwise you might be up all night with your stomach grumbling. Just make sure you eat a healthy snack that is actually good for you and it might just help you fall asleep after all.
